A flight reservation for a visa application is a real airline booking held for a limited time without full payment, so you can show a planned itinerary when you apply. It is not a paid, flyable ticket.

When it is used

Some embassies and visa centres ask for proof of onward or return travel at the application stage, before you are advised to buy a ticket. A flight reservation shows your planned dates and route.

What you should know

• It is a genuine reservation made with an airline; it is held only for a limited time, which depends on the airline and route.
• It is not a confirmed, paid ticket and cannot be used to fly unless you pay and ticket it before it expires.
• Requirements differ for every country and embassy. Some accept a reservation; some require a confirmed ticket or a full itinerary. Check the embassy’s current instructions and tell us what they ask for.
• Do not submit documents that misrepresent your travel plans. Visa authorities can refuse applications and may refuse future ones.
