The journey

A few years ago it was still filed away in my mind under the vague memory of "Serbia and Montenegro" - a name I had heard far more often than I had thought about the place. Then my father and his friend travelled there for a business opportunity. The opportunity didn't quite work out; the country was another story. They came back talking about the mountains, the coastline, the little towns and the food - the sheer contrast packed into somewhere so small. It is a little country with rather a lot going on. Just over 13,800 square kilometres, but with the Adriatic coast, the Bay of Kotor, medieval towns, rugged mountains, national parks, lakes and deep canyons. You don't have to choose between a European city break, a mountain escape and a coastal holiday. You can begin the morning in the stone lanes of Kotor, looking over the dramatic bay, and be surrounded by mountains not long after - Perast, Budva, Herceg Novi, Tivat and the quieter corners in between. Leave the coast and it gets even better. Durmitor National Park combines alpine landscapes with forests, lakes and peaks above 2,000 metres; it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Zabljak, over 1,400 m, turns to skiing and snow in winter. Kolasin offers another side of the mountains - quieter, greener, with its own ski centres just outside town. It works beautifully in winter. For many of us in India winter travel means Switzerland, Kashmir, Georgia or Turkey. Montenegro deserves a place in that conversation - the snow of the north combined with the historic towns and Adriatic light of the coast. A few days in the mountains, a warm meal by a fire, a drive through spectacular scenery, then down to the coast where the atmosphere changes completely. And then there is the food - Adriatic seafood, olive oil and herbs on the coast; cheeses, cured meats and hearty mountain dishes inland. Generous, rustic and ingredient-led.
